Short Film Analysis
Operator:
This short film is very suspenseful, and creates then tension with only one character, and another down the phone line. The only sound in this video is the characters voices. The viewer can only see one characters facial expressions and actions, and with the other they have to use their imagination to picture what Gemma is doing in the fire. The sound effects and the fear in Gemma’s voice adds to the tension and helps the viewers understand her situation, since they can’t see her. The lighting is very natural, and fits with the setting of the office, with a key and fill light on her face so that the audience can see Laura’s reactions and expressions. Both actors convey emotion through their acting, and the way they deliver their dialogue. Although Laura doesn’t know Gemma, the viewer can tell she cares about her by the way she speaks sympathetically and tries to comfort her.
The Ellington Kid
This short film is mainly set in one key location of the kebab shop, and the story is told by a character voicing over the actions. There is non-diegetic sounds of suspenseful music in the background to build up the tension of what is happening, as well as the diegetic voice over to explain. The shot lengths at the start of the film are very long, and some are edited to be in slow motion, and after the stabbing and as the tension builds, the shot lengths become much shorter and everything is faster paced. The two characters who are telling the story at the beginning, come across as quite comedic which enables the audience to establish their characters. The gang are portrayed by their performance as a ‘stereotypical’ violent gang, by their costumes and the bandanas over their faces and also by their aggressive acting. The kebab shop workers are shown as mysterious, by their lack of dialogue, and their performance of sharpening the knives.
